Over 500 runners, walkers, and spectators are expected to hit the streets of Lakeview on Saturday, July 29 for the Third Annual Power Mile Road Race. The Power Mile will take place in front of Edward Hynes Charter School at 990 Harrison Avenue. The evening kicks off with the first-ever Celebrity Power Half Mile featuring several notable New Orleanians at 6:05 pm. The Half Mile Youth Run takes place at 6:15, followed by the Open Mile at 6:30 and the Elite Mile at 7:00. Immediately following the last race will be a family-friendly party featuring live music, food from Central City BBQ, Reginelli's, and Elmer's Chee Wees, and beer from Urban South Brewery. In the elite race, both of last year's champions will return to defend their titles. Under Armour pro runner Frezer Legesse and local elite Malia Cali of the Louisiana Distance Project set the men's and women's course records at last year's race. Challenging Legesse will be last year's runner-up, RADrabbitPRO elite Brock Moreaux, as well as Lafayette's Kevin Castille, who last month set the world record in the men's 45-49 5,000 meters. In his first appearance at the Power Mile, former LSU track standout Blair Henderson is another contender to watch in the men's race. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Teaching Responsible Earth Education (T.R.E.E.). The Power Mile is organized by the Power Miler Track Club, a 501c3 nonprofit organization and a member club of USA Track & Field and the Road Runners Club of America.
